Breakfast skipping is more serious in the
younger generation
Skipping
breakfast is more serious in the younger generation. According to a study by the University of Sao Paulo in
Brazil, dietary styles that are likely to lead to weight gain often take root
in young people. Lifestyles that are prone to obesity increase the risk of
type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease as we get older.
When the
eating habit of skipping breakfast becomes established in young people, the
waist circumference and BMI (body mass index) tend to increase. In that case, as they get older, they are more likely to
develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
"A
large number of kids and young people around all over the planet skip breakfast
and eat low-nourishment, high-calorie processed foods as snacks on their way to
school or school. Fried bread, snacks, carbonated drinks, and instants. Eating
too much food increases the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, "says
Elide Oliveira Volkart, Department of Preventive Medicine, School of Medicine,
University of Sao Paulo.
The study
was conducted in collaboration with scientists from Austria, Belgium, Germany,
Greece, Italy and Spain with the support of the São Paulo Research Foundation.
Of these, European data analyzed data from a
cross-sectional study of 3,528 young people in 10 major cities, the Study on
Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles of Young People in Europe (HELENA-CSS). Thing.
Young people who skip breakfast are unhealthy
throughout their lives
The study
found that skipping breakfast increased the obesity-related index.
The
average waist circumference of boys who frequently skip breakfast was 2.61 cm
larger in Europe and 2.13 cm higher in Brazil than boys who eat breakfast
daily. The average BMI also increased by 1.29 for European boys and 1.69
for Brazilian boys.
Even for
girls, skipping breakfast increased the average waist circumference by 1.97 cm
in a European study. In addition, the average abdominal circumference
increased by 1.20 m in girls who stayed for a long time (more than 2 hours a
day).
Young
people who frequently skip breakfast have been shown to tend to be unhealthy
throughout their lives. The level of physical activity at school,
commuting, at home, and leisure was low, the frequency of playing TV, personal
computers, and video games was high, and there was a tendency for people to sit
for a long time.
"Young
people who spend a lot of time watching TV, using a computer, playing video
games at home and living a sedentary lifestyle may sleep late and, as a result,
skip breakfast more often. These are direct causes of obesity and type 2
diabetes, "says Volkart.
"To
lessen the danger of heftiness and diabetes, it is prescribed to have a decent
dietary equilibrium. Eat good food sources like dairy items, whole grains,
vegetables and fruits at home, and even children. It is recommended that you
exercise from medium intensity to 60 minutes a day, "Volkart points out.
Breakfast is the most important meal
According
to a study by the University of Granada, Spain, 13% of children who do not eat
breakfast daily or eat only a low-nutrition or energy-rich breakfast have high
blood cholesterol and uric acid levels and develop insulin resistance. It
became clear that.
Children
who had enough energy at breakfast met the recommended amount of physical
activity per day and tended to have better glucose metabolism.
"Breakfast
should be seen as the most important meal, not just the first meal of the
day," said Idoia Rabaen of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of
Granada.
"Truly, numerous youngsters go to class
without having breakfast and are eager until lunch. Then they eat too much for lunch and become obese. Eating
breakfast properly is a child's choice. It should be included in strategies for
the prevention of obesity, "Rabaen said.
Even adults
are dangerous without breakfast
A survey
of adults has also confirmed that skipping breakfast can easily damage your
health. Skipping breakfast increases the risk of death from heart disease,
according to a statement from the American College of Cardiology
(ACC). ACC recommends that "it is important to eat breakfast every
day."
The
research team analyzed the dietary intake of 6,550 men and women aged 40 to 75
years from data obtained from an average 18-year follow-up of the 1988-1994
American Health and Nutrition Survey. 5.1% said they didn't eat breakfast at all, 10.9% said they
didn't eat most, and 59% said they ate it every day.
As a
result, the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was 87% higher in those
who did not eat breakfast than in those who ate it daily. Skipping breakfast was associated with destabilization of
appetite, decreased satiety, increased blood pressure, and increased lipid
levels.
If you skip breakfast, your blood sugar level will rise more easily
Studies
have also shown that if people with type 2 diabetes skip breakfast and are
hungry until lunch, their blood sugar levels tend to rise after lunch and
dinner, leading to poor glycemic control.
A study by
the Tel Aviv University Diabetes Unit in Israel showed that not eating
breakfast not only led to a sharp rise in postprandial blood glucose
(postprandial hyperglycemia), but also worsened the insulin response of the
day. rice field.
"Many
studies have shown that eating breakfast properly leads to weight loss and has
a positive effect on weight control. In this study, eating breakfast also has a
positive effect on glycemic control for the day. I see, "says Professor
Daniela Yakubowich of the Diabetes Unit at the University of Israel.
The study
was conducted as a crossover study in which 22 overweight type 2 diabetic
patients (mean age 57 years, illness 8.4 years, BMI28.2, HbA1c7.7%) were
randomly assigned. Participants were asked to eat three meals on the first
day, and on the second day they skipped breakfast and had only lunch and
dinner. The contents of each meal were milk, tuna, bread, and chocolate
bar, and the calories were accurately divided into equal parts.
As a
result, the peak blood glucose level on the day without breakfast was 268 mg /
dL after lunch and 298 mg / dL after supper. On the other hand, the peak blood glucose levels after lunch
and after breakfast were 192 mg / dL and 215 mg / dL, respectively, and the
rapid rise in blood glucose level was suppressed. In addition, the peak
insulin secretion was found to be delayed by 30 minutes without breakfast.
Beta cells are damaged when breakfast is
skipped
"As a
result, it has been shown that not eating breakfast leads to a sharp rise in
blood glucose after lunch or dinner that day, leading to worsening of HbA1c,
which is the average of blood glucose for 1-2 months. "Professor
Yakubowich says.
Researchers
say that skipping breakfast takes longer to restore the ability of beta cells
to secrete insulin after lunch, causing a decrease and delay in the insulin
response, resulting in a more prone to elevated daily blood sugar levels. That
is.
Furthermore,
if the hunger time continues from dinner to lunch the day before, the amount of
free fatty acids in the blood increases, and insulin that lowers blood sugar
levels may not work well.
"It
has been shown that skipping breakfast can cause significant damage to beta
cell function. Even if you don't eat too much lunch and supper, skipping
breakfast can lead to high blood sugar. We recommend the "don't skip
breakfast" diet for patients with type 2 diabetes, "concludes Professor
Yakubowich.
